Planning – The 4-Step Model

It has been said that failing to plan is planning to fail.  This is a fancy way of saying that if you don’t make a plan to achieve your goals you probably will not achieve them.  While there are hundreds of approaches to planning it can be broken down into simple, understandable steps.   This 4-step model should be helpful.

Assess Needs

Having goals are good, but they should meet a need and should be appropriate for you situation.  The list below will help you choose reasonable, appropriate goals.

·         Does the goal involve other people? - You should never count on other people’s cooperation to achieve your goals.  (Wanting to have a girlfriend is a reasonable goal but wanting to date Brittany Spears or Jessica Alba probably is not)

·         Is the goal achievable? - It is great to dream but you should choose goals that are possible.  (Wanting to be the starting center for the Blazers if you’re 5’ 6” and can’t make a basket doesn’t work)

·         Where can you get the training or experience necessary, who can you ask?  (See question #4)

·         Break down larger goals into smaller more easily achievable goals that will help you work toward the larger goal.  (If you want to attend the UofO, you may need to complete your GED, take classes at a Community College etc.)

·         You should ask yourself if this goal is worth the effort needed to achieve it.

·         You should consider how achieving your goal or working toward it will affect others.

·         Working toward and achieving your goal may have both positive and negative affects for you.  (Going to school will take time and money, playing in the NFL may result in injury and physical problems later in life).

·         When you take everything into consideration your goal may not be worth doing – consider other similar goals that may have most of the positives without as many negatives.

Set Goals

The process of setting goals involves turning your NEEDS into goals. A goal is a very specific result you intend to work toward. You can have both long-term and short-term goals. You can have goals for the day, the week, the year and for your lifetime.  Taking some time to decide what you need or want is a critical part of the process.  This can be done by sitting down and thinking about all of things you want and write them down.  Once you have spent sufficient time making a good list look at your goals, begin to cross some off. Use these questions to help you sort out your list. 

Make a Plan

It is important to begin to develop a plan for your life. Ask yourself, "Where do I want to be 5, 10 and 20 years from now?" Once you have this in mind, you can then determine what you need to do to achieve those goals. The more steps you can determine, the more successful you will be in reaching your goals.

Once you have narrowed down your list to only those goals that fit your life, it is time to sort them by how long it would take to achieve them.  Sort these goals into three categories:  Short-Term Goals (goals achievable in the next 90-days); Intermediate Goals (goals achievable in the next 4-12 months); and Long-Term Goals (goals achievable in 1-5 years).  The next step is to determine the order of importance for those steps. What will you do first, second, last?

Take Action

Having a plan, by itself, doesn't mean you will reach your goals. You must actually do the things listed in your plan. An important part of taking action is affirming your goals. It is important to write them down. In fact, goal setting experts will tell you to post them around where you will see them. Say them out loud. Share them with your trusted friends. Seeing them in writing helps them to become a reality.
