Independent Living?

The Haag Home for Boys is an Independent Living Program.  The Key word here is PROGRAM.  A Program is a way of doing something that has a specific purpose and structure.  If you were going to play professional football, you would go to a training camp to learn about the Team’s Program.  Once there, you would learn the necessary plays and practice their execution so that you would have the skills necessary to become an effective football player.

The Haag Home has developed a PROGRAM that will prepare you to live independently.  Like the comprehensive playbook of a professional football team, the Haag Home has a set of rules and regulations that when executed according to the program, will lead to graduation and independent living.

Where am I in the Program?

Weekly Student Status Report:

The information you will need each day/week in order to see how well you are progressing through the program, and what you could be working on to improve your program is contained (in part) on the Weekly Student Status Report.  This report is printed each week to show you where you stand in the program during that program week.  Each area is given a score between zero and 4.  A score of 2 would indicate that you are just meeting the minimum requirements of the program.  Although you may continue through the program and eventually graduate, it will take longer and you will be unable to take advantage of the additional privileges offered for levels 3 and 4.

The Weekly Student Status Report should answer the following Questions:

  1. What is my Current Level?
  2. How many weeks have I been on my current level?
  3. What is my Potential Score? (This is the score that is used to determine if I am to go up or down in my level).
  4. Who is my employer?
  5. How many hours have I worked this week (Friday – Thursday)? (Note: 2.3 = 23, 3.5 = 35 etc.)
  6. How much is in my account so far?  (I know I may have not been paid by all of my employers yet).
  7. Do I have money that I can draw from?
  8. Do I owe restitution?
  9. Am I actively participating in Drug and Alcohol sessions?
  10. Am I staying clean and sober?  (Every 45 days I will get 1- point up to 4 – points total).
  11. Am I completing the necessary 13 hours of skill building each week?  (Skill Building includes Modules, KP, dinner etc.)
  12. Am I actively participating in treatment with my therapist? (I may or may not have a therapist per my treatment plan).
  13. Am I making progress in the corrective thinking sessions?  (This is one of the most important areas and affects other scores).
  14. How does the program manager and treatment manager feel I am doing in the program?
  15. How does the program staff feel I am progressing through the program?
  16. Does my apartment look neat and clean?
  17. Do my peers feel I give them respect and am doing well in the program? (This score is not averaged in your potential).
  18. Do I get up on time, go to work when scheduled (or asked) and do a good job? (I need a 2 or higher to get a draw!)
  19. How many days have I completed in the program?

What should I be doing?

Our Mission – “Good news”

Our Mission is simple.  It is to assist you in changing from a dependent person (dependent on OYA, the program and the probation and/or parole system) to an independent person.  We (the program) believe that each of you have the ability to make good choices.  We believe that you should be allowed to make decisions (practice independent living) while being held accountable for the result(s) of your decisions (i.e. good decisions will likely result in a higher score thereby moving you closer to program completion, while a poor decision will result in a lowered score and slow your progress toward program completion.)

You should always remember that The Haag Home is a community-based program that gives you constant choices.  The choice to return or not from checking out, to go to work or not, to get up each morning on time or not, to go to the place where you say you are going or not, are examples of choices that you are constantly faced with.  The good news is, the juvenile court system views every day that you spend at the Haag Home as community time.  This time (if done well) is used to show the court that you have changed and are progressing toward independent living.  This “good” time in the community can dramatically reduce the total amount of time you spend on either parole of probation.
